3 Tips To Protect Your Car Against Potential Break Ins

Having your vehicle broken into is one of the worst things you can experience as a car owner. It can be personally and financially stressful once you take into account any necessary repairs and replacement of any stolen items. And while there is no guaranteed way to ensure that your car will never get broken into, especially if you live in a densely populated urban area, there are some steps that any driver can take to help protect their car and their valuables that can decrease the chances of break ins and theft.

Make Sure Your Doors are Locked and Your Windows are Up

While it may seem like an obvious first step against theft, you’d be surprised how many vehicle break ins happen due to a car not being properly locked or having the windows rolled down. Taking an extra minute to make sure all of your doors are securely locked and your windows are all the way up will prevent most vehicle break ins, as potential thieves usually don’t want to go through the trouble of breaking a window to be able to get into a car.

Cover All of Your Valuables

It’s always best to make sure you have things like phones, wallets, laptop and tablet computers with you, but there are times when you need to leave your valuables in your vehicle. In those situations, you’re going to need to make sure that your items are out of view from windows so potential thieves aren’t going to find something. You can put your valuables in your backseat or trunk, preferably under some sort of covering like a blanket, a jacket, or a towel so that they’re safely hidden away from view.

Park In a Covered and Well Lit Area

This may be difficult if you live in a more urban area that only has street parking available, but the best place to park your car to prevent break ins is in a well lit covered space like a parking garage or deck. If those parking options aren’t available, just try and park in the best lit area close to your destination for optimal safety.
